A heart attack is medically known as acute myocardial infarction. Here Acute means sudden, myo refers to muscle, and cardio refers to heart. The myocardium is the medical name for the heart muscle. Infarct means that (heart) tissue has been destroyed or killed because of the clogging of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart.
In simple words it can be said that a heart attack occurs when there is a severe blockage in an artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. The cause of this blockage is usually the build-up of plaque (deposits of fat-like substances, or atherosclerosis) along the walls of the arteries. When this happens, The sudden lack of blood flow to the heart muscle reduces the heart of needed oxygen and nutrients. If the blockage is not opened quickly, the heart muscle is likely to suffer serious, permanent damage as areas of tissue die.
It is a common notion among people that the main symptom of heart attack is chest pain. However, the studies reveal that this is not true. And more importantly, the symptoms of heart attack for women are very different from men. Before menopause, the female hormones or estrogen delay the onset of the symptoms of heart attack in women. Health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure also increase the risk for more heart attack incidence in women.
Some of the symptoms of heart attack are the same for both men and women. These symptoms include Chest discomfort, uncomfortable pressure over the chest, fullness of chest, squeezing of chest, pain in the centre of the chest, spreading pain to inner side of left arm(occasionally right arm), Pain over the upper back, Radiating pain to the jaw, Radiating pain over the neck region and the Upper part the stomach(epigastric region), Nausea or vomiting and Sweating.
It may be noted here that with women suffering from heart attacks, only 30 percent report chest pain and discomfort prior to a heart attack, and 43% didn’t experience chest pain during one. Instead the warning symptoms displayed by most women included unusual fatigue (70.7%), Sleep disturbance (47.8%), and Shortness of breath (42.1%). Also indigestion (39%) and anxiety (35%) were also some other symptoms.
Major acute symptoms during a heart attack in woman in order of reported frequency include:
Moreover, many a times women come complaining o discomfort and what appears as a problem of gastritis comes out as a symptom of heart attack in ECG. Proper treatment should be started as early as possible as death could take place in 1 to 2 hours, if not treated properly.
